WARNING - INFECTED VIDEO FILES (PHISHING)

 Hello to the readers of this blog,

There is currently a big problem on many forums, with People posting infected Self Extracting Video files.

If you download a Video in any form of file type (Rar, 001, Zip or other), which contains anything but a normally expected Video DO NOT OPEN OR RUN IT!!
No matter what file type (Rar, 001, zip or other) you download for a Video, if there is any exe, .bat or anything else but a Video file, DO NOT OPEN OR RUN IT! Reliable Uploaders will not use anything different than has been used for years as it is not necessary to change what worked. DO NOT Rely on your Anti Virus to detect an infection! They are unlikely to detect these infections as they are constantly changing.

Lastly, remember that the person/people posting these infections will probably read this and attempt to find new ways to get you to run their infected files to steal your Passwords/RS+MU Accounts, Rapidshare Points etc.

If you do so it will take your passwords that are stored in your browser, Messenger and attempt to send them out to the internet where your passwords will be used for a hackers benefit. This could mean that all your accounts such as Paypal, Forums, File hosts such as RS, MU, possibly Credit Cards and anything else of value could become Compromised and you MAY lose them or money! Virtually NO Anti Viruses will detect an infection so DO NOT rely on your AV protection! Knowledge is your BEST protection.

It is highly advisable not to use your browser to store your passwords as this makes you very vulnerable to password theft from any infected exe that you run, instead use a password manager such as the excellent Keepass or other password managers such as Roboform or Lastpass provided it is guaranteed free from infections, hint find an installer with a Digital Signature and use a serial or similar text registration method to register. Keepass is freeware so only get it from the homesite Otherwise a less secure method but better than nothing is to set a browser master password to provide some protection from password theft.

Then set Browser master password in Firefox using the following:
1. Click 'Tools' on the top of Firefox
2. Click the 'Security' tab
3. Tick 'Use a master password'
4. Enter a master password making sure the password strength is high
5. Click 'OK'

The most secure method of storing passwords is Keepass and for setting up Keepass for automatic hot key login i'll tell you this later....

Notes for Uploaders

Because of the problems that Self extracting Video files are causing please avoid using Self Extracting Files (SFX) when creating your upload. Using this type of file is totally unnecessary and is of no benefit to downloaders or even yourself.
Re-uploading does not require the use of SFX. The best way is to use bANbUSTER for windows or one of the other methods.


If you Run or have Ran one of these Files:
Install KeyScrambler from the official website below and Change ALL your Passwords Immediately, preferably from a Clean PC! Although it is not believed or known to infect a PC after it has run, the possibility exists!

Additional Security Tips:


Keep your RS Premium/Collectors accounts Locked at all times to avoid having your Points Stolen, that is what it is there for! Also do not store your unlock code in your email, ensure it is totally deleted because if your passwords are stolen the unlock code will be found in your email! Files and multiple files can be deleted without the lock being removed using RapidUploader. In the Log File, select the files and right click and select Delete online. Do not keep unlock codes in your email, that will be the first place a hacker will look to unlock your RS account and steal your account, Points and files.

Make sure you have a Software Firewall installed, these will prevent unwanted programs from accessing the internet including Password Stealers. Ideally, get the software from the makers website and use a Key to activate for security reasons. Otherwise, ensure that the file you download has a Valid Digital Signature to ensure that the file has not been altered ie had a virus/trojan added to it. Good Firewalls are Comodo Freeware version which has very strong protection but is a large download or Outpost Firewall Pro which is smaller and can be registered with an easily available registration code which does not become blacklisted. Other firewalls are also very good such as Kaspersky Internet Security but this firewall requires constant registration code updates so can be a bit of a nuisance.

DO NOT use automatic rule creation. Use Prompt on attempted internet access and only permit programs you know need internet access AND are trusted! Some Malware writers name their executable with names like normal Windows programs such as Internet Explorer (iexplorer.exe) to try to trick you into allowing internet access. Other names could be used! You are advised to check the path of the executable attempting to access the internet to make sure it is running from the correct location. If you don't have the program running, then that is another give away for Malware. If you don't run the files then you will not be prompted and you will not have a problem.

 I strongly consider using KeePass (available free from the official site) to store your Passwords for a more secure browsing environment. After which, remove the passwords from your browser.

It is important that you delete ALL important stored Browser Passwords, including Google, PayPal, Bank Account, email, RS and MU accounts! While they exist you are at risk of theft. Also remove any stored passwords in your Messenger programs as these are also at risk.

DO NOT RELY ON YOUR ANTI VIRUS! These infections are so frequently changing that they can never detect all infections quick enough to protect you! Since Kaspersky and other Anti Virus have been adding these infections to their databases the hackers have had to come up with alternative ways to infect PC's. They are now producing custom packers which cannot be decompressed or checked by Anti Viruses so can not be detected. Mighty_Marvel has sent a number of these infected files to Anti Virus Companies to add them to their databases. Kaspersky has done so very quickly, taking approximately 2 hours, Nod32 has failed to add any of them and are still undetected by Nod32 on Virus Total even now.

For new Video files which have never been played  it is advisable to open the file directly with the Media Player rather than double clicking the file! This can be done with right click and Open With..... [Media Player] or drag and dropping the Media File to the Media Player (for some Media Players) or Opening the Media Player and using the normal file open menu options. This will avoid exe files hidden as Media files ie using Media File icons from being accidentally run.

It is advisable to change Windows folder options [File Menu--> Folder Options-->View tab] so that file extensions are always shown for all file types by unticking "hide extensions for known file types". This IS NOT the regular windows setting and can be a security risk.

If you want to check the files before downloading the whole TV episode/Movie then a small section can be checked to make sure it is what it is marked as being and that it does not contain an exe. If you download less than 5MB the uploader will not even get a RS point so will receive no reward for attempting to trick you ;) So if you download a very small section of less than 5MB and pause the download and then extract the video with WinRar using "Keep Broken Files" checked the video that you have so far will extract and you can check it before continuing the download. If it is a normal video file, is what it is intended to be and the quality is acceptable to you then continue the download and the uploader will get their RS points. Otherwise stop the download and give no reward to the uploader.

On this blog most of the files are uploaded by us and we do keep yours and ours security in mind so it's through checked for any Trojans or such Viruses but it's your responsibility to be safe from such threats.

Windows Vista / 2008 Tweaks

Windows Vista introduces a number of new features to the TCP/IP stack, including CTCP, and TCP Window Auto-Tuning. This new implementation works much better by default than previous Windows versions with broadband internet connections, and is able to adjust the RWIN value on the fly, depending on the BDP (bandwidth-delay product). This, however, introduces some problems with older routers and restricts the user from tweaking some of the TCP/IP parameters. Still, there is always some room for improvement, and this article explains known the tweakable TCP/IP parameters.

To enter some of the commands below, you will need to run "elevated" command prompt. To do so, click the Start icon > Run > type: cmd , then click CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER. Alternatively, you can navigate to Start > All Programs > Accessories > right-click Command Prompt and choose "Run as Administrator

Check the TCP/IP state

To check the current status of the Vista TCP/IP tweakable parameters, in elevated command prompt type the following command:

netsh int tcp show global

You will be presented with something like the following:

The settings, as well as their default and recommended state are explained below. The two most important tweakable parameters are "Auto-Tuning Level" and "Congestion Control Provider".


TCP Auto-Tuning


To turn off the default RWIN auto tuning behavior, (in elevated command prompt) type:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

The default auto-tuning level is "normal", and the possible settings for the above command are:

disabled: uses a fixed value for the tcp receive window. Limits it to 64KB (limited at 65535).
higlyrestricted: allows the receive window to grow beyond its default value, very conservatively
restricted: somewhat restricted growth of the tcp receive window beyond its default value
normal: default value, allows the receive window to grow to accommodate most conditions
experimental: allows the receive window to grow to accommodate extreme scenarios (not recommended, it can degrade performance in common scenarios, only intended for research purposes. It enables RWIN values of over 16 MB)

Our recommendation: normal (unless you're experiencing problems).

If you're experiencing problems with your NAT router or SPI firewall, try the "restricted", "highlyrestricted", or even "disabled" state.

Notes:
- Reportedly, many home NAT routers with a SPI firewall may have problems with enabled tcp auto-tuning in it's "normal" state, resulting in slow speeds, packet loss, and general reduced network performance.
- auto-tuning also causes problems with older routers that do not support TCP Windows scaling.
- netsh set commands take effect immediately after executing, there is no need to reboot.
- sometimes when using "normal" mode and long lasting connections (p2p software / torrents), tcp windows can get very large and consume too much resources, if you're experiencing problems try a more conservative setting.

Compound TCP - Improve throughput

The traditional slow-start and congestion avoidance algorithms in TCP help avoid network congestion by gradually increasing the TCP window at the beginning of transfers until the TCP Receive Window boundary is reached, or packet loss occurs. For broadband internet connections that combine high TCP Window with higher latency (high BDP), these algorithms do not increase the TCP windows fast enough to fully utilize the bandwidth of the connection.

Compound TCP (CTCP) is a newer method, available in Vista and Server 2008 (there is also a hotfix available for XP/2003). CTCP increases the TCP send window more aggressively for broadband connections (with large RWIN and BDP). CTCP attempts to maximize throughput by monitoring delay variations and packet loss. It also ensures that its behavior does not impact other TCP connections negatively.

By default, Vista has CTCP turned off, and Server 2008 turned on. Turning this option on can significantly increase throughput.

To enable CTCP, in elevated command prompt type:

netsh int tcp set global congestionprovider=ctcp

To disable CTCP:

netsh int tcp set global congestionprovider=none

Possible options are: ctcp, none, default (restores the system default value).
Recommended setting: ctcp

It is better to use this newer generation CTCP congestion control algorithm for most broadband connections, I recommend it being turned on.

ECN Capability

ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification) is a mechanism that provides routers with an alternate method of communicating network congestion. It is aimed to decrease retransmissions. In essence, ECN assumes that the cause of any packet loss is router congestion. It allows routers experiencing congestion to mark packets and allow clients to automatically lower their transfer rate to prevent further packet loss. ECN is disabled by default in Vista, as it is possible that it may cause problems with some older routers that do not support this feature.

To check whether your router supports ECN, you can use the Microsoft Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool

The results will be displayed under "Traffic Congestion Test".

To enable ECN, in elevated command prompt type:

netsh int tcp set global ecncapability=enabled

Possible settings are: enabled, disabled, default (restores the state to the system default).
The default state is: disabled
Our recommendation: disabled

RSS - Receive-side Scaling


The receive-side scaling setting enables parallelized processing of received packets on multiple processors, while avoiding packet reordering. It avoids packet reordering y separating packets into "flows", and using a single processor for processing all the packets for a given flow. Packets are separated into flows by computing a hash value based on specific fields in each packet, and the resulting hash values are used to select a processor for processing the flow. This approach ensures that all packets belonging to a given TCP connection will be queued to the same processor, in the same order that they were received by the network adapter.

To set RSS:

netsh int tcp set global rss=enabled

Possible rss settings are: disabled, enabled, default (restores rss state to the system default).
Default state is: enabled
Recommended: enabled (if you have 2 or more processor cores and a NIC that can handle RSS)

Manually tuning Registry Parameters

Many of the registry keys tuning TCP/IP parameters from previous Windows versions no longer work in Vista and Server 2008. Below is a list of the few we've confirmed to still work. Note that for changes to these settings to take effect the computer needs to be rebooted. As always, a registry backup is recommended if making any changes, and some proficiency in using regedit is required.

In regedit (Start icon > Run > type: regedit while logged in as administrator), you can navigate and edit the following keys.

MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) - the maximum packet size.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{...}\
MTU=1500 (DWORD, entry does not exist by default)

The {....} part of the above path is the unique identifier of your network adapter. You can recognize the correct adapter by looking at it's IP address, if obtaining IP automatically labeled by: DhcpIPAddress=192.168.x.x text value, for example.

We recommend leaving this at default, unless you want to lower it. Vista uses the largest possible packet size for the underlying network by default.

Note: In some test environments, the correct MTU entry may be offset by 8. The 8 offset seems to coincide with the size of the PPPoE overhead. Check the result with the TCP Analyzer.



TCP 1323 Options

(DWORD, entry created automatically by Windows when you run the "netsh int tcp set global autotuninglvl=..." command, set to 0 by default).

Setting this seems to have no effect, since auto-tuning uses the TCP 1323 scale factor and changes it on the fly, disregarding this setting. Additional testing may be required to determine it's effect if auto-tuning is turned off. Setting it to 1 is best for broadband connections.



NetDMA


NetDMA enables support for advanced direct memory access. In essence, it provides the ability to more efficiently move network data by minimizing CPU usage. NetDMA frees the CPU from handling memory data transfers between network card data buffers and application buffers by using a DMA engine.

(DWORD, 1 to enable, 0 to disable NetDMA. Value not present by default in Vista)

Recommended setting is 1, a new DWORD value may need to be created if not already present in the registry.



DefaultTTL


TTL can be safely left alone in many cases. It is a limit to the time and number of hops/routers a packet will travel before being discarded. A number that's too small risks packets being discarded before reaching their destination. A number that's too large (over 128) will cause delay in when lost IP packets are discarded.

(DWORD, set to a decimal value between 32 and 128. Recommended: 64)



TcpMaxDataRetransmissions

Determines how many times unacknowledged data (non-connect segment) is retransmitted before TCP aborts the connection. The retransmission timeout is doubled with each successive retransmission on a connection. It is reset when responses resume.

(DWORD, recommended: between 3 and 10, default registry value 255, default 5 in documentation)



SynAttackProtect

This undocumented setting provides protection against SYN denial of service (DoS) attacks. When enabled, connections timeout sooner if SYN attack is detected. When set at 1, TCPMaxDataRetransmissions can be lowered further.

TcpTimedWaitDelay (port allocation)

Short lived (ephemeral) TCP/IP ports above 1024 are allocated as needed by the OS. The default Vista values have improved from previous Windows versions, and are usually sufficient under normal load. However, in some instances under heavy load it it may be necessary to adjust the settings below to tweak the availability of user ports requested by an application.

If the default limits are exceeded under heavy loads, the following error may be observed: "address in use: connect exception". By default under Vista (when the values are not presend in the registry), the OS can allocate up to 16384 ephemeral ports above port 1024, and the OS waits for 120 seconds before reclaiming ports after an application closes the TCP connection. This is a considerable improvement over older Windows versions. However, if necessary, the following registry values can be added/edited:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
MaxUserPort=65535
(DWORD, not in the registry by default. Recommended: leave at default, or use a number above 16384 up to 65535 decimal as necessary) - maximum number of ports to use. 1024 is automatically subtracted from entered value to allow for reserved ports under 1024.
TcpTimedWaitDelay=30 (DWORD, 0xffffffff in registry by default. Recommended: 30 decimal, denoting 30 seconds) - time to wait before reclaiming ports, in seconds. Default time before reclaiming ports, if value is at 0xffffffff or not present in the registry is 120 seconds. Just reducing the delay is often sufficient without changing MaxUserPort, as it allows for reusing ports more efficiently.

Ephemeral ports can be checked and changed using netsh as well.

To query the current values, in command prompt, type:
netsh int ipv4 show dynamicportrange tcp (for UDP, use the same command, replacing only "tcp" with "udp" at the end)

To set both the starting, and max user port using netsh, in elevated command prompt run:
netsh int ipv4 set dynamicportrange protocol=tcp start=1025 num=64511 (start=NNN denoting the starting port, and num=NNN denoting the number of ports)

Notes:
By default, dynamic ports are allocated between ports 49152 and 65535 (for a total of 16384 ephemeral ports).
Using netsh allows to set both the starting port and port range. Editing the Registry allows for setting the port range, and the starting port is fixed at 1025. Deleting the MaxUserPort registry entry (or setting it to a value outside the allowed range) causes the OS to revert to using the default values.
Some system processes can install port filters to block certain port ranges. If ephemeral ports run into these filtered port ranges, TCP/IP applications will be unable to bind to any ports.



QoS Reserved Bandwidth

As with Windows XP, nework adapters have a "QoS Packet Scheduler" enabled by default, which reserves 20% of bandwidth by default for QoS applications that request priority traffic. Note this only has effect in the presence of running QoS applications that request priority traffic. Registry value is undocumented for the Vista version of Windows. To customize this setting, in the Windows Registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Psched
NonBestEffortLimit=0
(DWORD, not present in the registry by default. Recommended: 0 , possible values between 0 and 100) - indicates the percentage value of reserved bandwidth for QoS applications. Set to 0 to disable.

Notes: This tweak applies only to Windows versions that have Qos Packet Scheduler enabled. It will ONLY have effect in the presense of running QoS applications.



Gaming Tweak - Disable Nagle's algorithm

The tweak below allows for tweaking or disabling Nagle's alogrithm. Disabling "nagling" allows for very small packets to be transferred immediately without delay. Note that disabling Nagle's algorithm is only recommended for some games, and it may have negative impact on file transfers/throughput. The dafault state (Nagling enabled) improves performance by allowing several small packets to be combined together into a single, larger packet for more efficient transmission. While this improves overall performance and reduces TCP/IP overhead, it may briefly delay transmission of smaller packets. Keep in mind that disabling Nagle's algorithm may have some negative effect on file transfers, and can only help reduce delay in some games. To implement this tweak, in the registry editor (Start>Run>regedit) find:

This setting configures the maximum number of outstanding ACKs in Windows XP/2003/Vista/2008:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{NIC-id}
There will be multiple NIC interfaces listed there, for example: {1660430C-B14A-4AC2-8F83-B653E83E8297}. Find the correct one with your IP address listed. Under this {NIC-id} key, create a new DWORD value:
TcpAckFrequency=1 (DWORD value, 1=disable, 2=default, 2-n=send ACKs if outstanding ACKs before timed interval. Setting not present by default).

For gaming performance, recommended is 1 (disable). For pure throughput and data streaming, you can experiment with values over 2. If you try larger values, just make sure TcpAckFrequency*MTU is less than RWIN, since the sender may stop sending data if RWIN fills witout acknowledgement.

Also, find the following key (if present):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSMQ\Parameters
Add a new DWORD value:
TCPNoDelay=1
(DWORD value, 0 to enable Nagle's algorithm, 1 to disable, not present by default)

To configure the ACK interval timeout (only has effect if nagling is enabled), find the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{NIC-id}
TcpDelAckTicks=0
(DWORD value, default=2, 0=disable nagling, 1-6=100-600 ms). Note you can also set this to 1 to reduce the nagle effect from the default of 200ms without disabling it.

Notes:
Reportedly, the above gaming tweak (disabling nagle's algorithm) can reduce WoW (World of Warcraft) latency by almost half!
XP/2003 needs hotfix or SP2 for it to work (MS KB 815230)
Vista needs hotfix or SP1 for it to work (MS KB 935458)

Remote Shutdown PCs On LAN

This Will only work if they are on your LAN (Local Area Network/Using the Same Router)


Click On Start-Run-Cmd
Type- tracert google.com
Then hit enter

Then when that is done, find there IP. It should be similar to yours. You can also trace them at the site listed below.

http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/

Then Type shutdown -i and hit enter

A window pops up, when it does, click on "Add" then type in there ip in the box and press ok.
You can choose to warn or to not warn them.
For Comment, just put a little space.
Then Click ok. Your Computer will freeze for like 10-20 seconds and then it should turn them off. They have to be on your local network.

Google Acc - Check

This is my official reply to all mails/comments/scraps asking me how to get back hacked Gmail/Orkut/Google Account (Most of Mine orkuts friends A/cs are hacked in recent past)
Everyone should read this no matter how safe you think you are!

As Google Account is a single account used across all Google services like Gmail, Orkut, Blogger, Adsense, Feedburner. etc, it can turn out to be our worst nightmare if it gets hacked! Like many other online services Google tries to protect your account with secret question as well as optional secondary email address. But there is one more official option which only Google Provides! Now lets go step-by-step?


1. Trying "Forget Password" Option

I know this will not work in most cases, as options like forget password rely on secondary email address and security question, both of which can be easily changed once a account gets hacked. Still you should try atleast once as most password gets hacked by script kiddies and not by real hackers. So go to Forget Password form first!

2. What if "Forget Password" Option Fails

You can submit a form to Google in which you can provide details about your Google Account usage. Details include information which most likely only real owner can provide. Here are few things for example?

* Last successful login date
* Account creation date
* Google products you used with this account and the date you started using each one
* Details about Orkut account (if you use Orkut)
* Details about Blogger account (if you use Blogger)

Now most important part is what they quoted on the form,

"Please answer each question as thoroughly and accurately as possible. If you're not certain about some of the information, provide your closest estimate. Whether or not we can return your account depends on the strength and accuracy of your responses."

So I will suggest following things:-

Your goal should be to give Google maximum & accurate data! So take your time and submit form with maximum amount of information possible. You can consult your trusted friends if you are not sure. As an example it could be Peter or Sarah who invited you on orkut. If you are not sure call them up and ask it!

Submit only one form! Yes this should be common sense. Do not submit multiple forms. A person who uses around 10-15 Google products asked me if he can submit multiple forms mentioning different Google products.

Submit form from the place which you use most often to access your account like PC at home! Although they haven't mentioned this explicitly, line above submit button says, Please note that we need your IP address in order to resolve this issue. Your IP address will be captured automatically when you submit this form.

Getting Your RS Back If Scammed


Hi all,

After Deejam and I recovered our collector's account, we felt its important to let everyone know how to recover their precious RS accounts (whether premium or free accounts) if lost to scammers, and show those ~~~~ out there that they can go screw themselves.


From Rapidshare :


The most important thing is an exact copy of the error-message and your account-details. Name: ...

E-Mail: ...

Login-ID: ...

Transaction-ID: ...

Date of account-creation: ...

Date of payment: ...

This has to be the details you used when you paid for your account. You can find your transaction-ID in your Paypal account.

** If you used an eCheck.




Here is what we did provided for Rapidshare Technical Support to get our accounts back:

1. Account name: Login ID and the aliases you've used

2. Date of creation

3. Date of thievery

4. A copy of the LOGS (where the IPs are recorded) and tell RS which ones are friendly and get them to blacklist the hostile ones (which are most likely ones belonged to the scammer)

5. Email used to create the account

6. All emails that have been applied to the account

7. Make a backup of all the links of the files uploaded to the account (use that extract link option)


IMPORTANT - Rapidshare asked us to give them a few links of uploaded content, I think they use them to track the account so its vital for you to have a clear record of what have been uploaded to your account and what their links are.


8. Tell them the Number of files uploaded and the Total Size of the files uploaded. Simply copy paste the account status on your main menu.

9. Tell them how many points you have got.

10. Take screenshots of Your Main Menu, Your LOGS, Your OPTIONS


Tips:

- Make sure your email is sincere. formal and honest. Don't be aggressive, they reply really fast and they are nice people.

- Tell them a good reason why your account MUST be recovered. Shef and I said our account contained confidential and very personal information that are very important to our family etc...

VTC.Microsoft.NET.Framework.3.5-CFE

The .NET 3.5 tutorial is of 7 hours so i'll just give you a quick sneek into it from Mark Long, i'll upload it as soon as possible.

You can download the videos in many formats and there are also audio downloads for each video. But, most of all, the accompanying source code (in either c# or vb.net) is available. I have read asp.net books but have found that following along with the source code in each of these videos is the single best way to learn asp.net.
Here's how i do it. I run the video with the sample code running in one instance of Visual Studio.net. Then i open up another instance of Visual Studio.net and recreate the whole project while watching (and pausing) the video and mess around with all the properties of the control I am learning about. Trust me, asp.net is not something you can master by just reading. you have to be hands on, Have fun!
